Konstanze, eine junge Spanierin von Stand, ihre englische Zofe Blonde und deren Freund, der Diener Pedrillo, sind von Seeräubern überfallen und auf einen Sklavenmarkt gebracht worden. Dort hatten sie Glück im Unglück: Bassa Selim, ein gebürtiger Spanier vornehmer Abkunft, einst Christ und jetzt Mohammedaner, kaufte sie alle und sorgte dafür, daß sie in seinem am Meer gelegenen Palast unter halbwegs erträglichen Bedingungen leben konnten.
Belmonte, Konstanzes Verlobter, hat nach Monaten qualvoller Ungewißheit einen Brief seines Dietsers Pedrillo erhalten und kennt nun endlich Schicksal und Aufenthaltsort der Vermißten. Er rüstet ein Schiff und segelt hinüber zu der von Pedrillo bezeichneten Küste, entschlossen, die Entführten ein weitered Mal zu entführen.
